All of us know that time is a precious commodity. We also know - intellectually, at least - that we shouldn't waste any of it. But the truth is each of us treats time differently. Those who live the most impressive, most meaningful lives tend to be the ones who treat time with the utmost respect. Those whose existences are sorry and sad tend to disrespect time, big time!
So, where in that spectrum do you fit? To help you figure that out, here's a useful exercise.
On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being awful and 10 awesome, how do you rank your current level of time management skill?
Be honest with yourself; it's the only way you'll truly benefit from this article. (For your own good, please avoid picking '5' as an easy way to avoid thinking hard about my question. There may be safety in the middle of any pack, but genuine progress is only made when we honestly assess our capacity for under- and over-performance.).
Did you pick a number between 1 and 4 or 6 and 10?
If you selected a low number, then I congratulate you on your honesty concerning time management shortcomings. If you chose a high number, then I'm glad you're doing well.
Either way, there's probably room for improvement.
So, now spend a few moments drinking in these 5 different perspectives on time management. They're drawn from different people, and, as you read each one, think hard about a possible application you can make.
Deal?
Great. Here goes:
PERSPECTIVE 1:
"Dost thou love Life? then do not squander Time; for that's the Stuff Life is made of." Benjamin Franklin .
PERSPECTIVE 2:
"Those that make the best Use of their Time have none to spare." Thomas Fuller
PERSPECTIVE 3:
"You can ask me for anything you like, except time." Napoleon Bonaparte
PERSPECTIVE 4:
"The years pass more quickly as we become older." Arthur Schopenhauer
PERSPECTIVE 5:
"At times it is folly to hasten; at other times, to delay. The wise do everything in its proper time." Ovid
Regardless of where you are today in your personal life journey, you will want to take steps to guard your time more carefully against the vagaries of low priority distractions.
The essence of wisdom in this regard is to slow down, savour and lengthen the moments spent with those you love and to cut back on the hours wasted on irrelevancies that do not move you closer to your key life goals.
Happy thinking... about each perspective! (If you're 100% committed to becoming way, way, way better at time management, then you might want to get, read and study my time management ebook Unshackled! 7 Ways to Make Time for MY Dreams.
